Holland America's Biggest Mistake
by A Traveler from Phoenix, AZ
Sailing date:
Aug 2008
Pros:
Incredible destinations -- The Baltic and a Translantic Cruise -- all our destinations were wonderful ... but the ship......
Cons:
This ship, its design, facilities, function, and most top staff are a disgrace to the great Holland America Line.
We love Holland America, having sailed with them 10 times on multiple ships. Always great ... until the Eurodam and our Veranda Stateroom. This ship sailed way too soon and tried to cram too many people into more cramped rooms and what seems to be less available public space than smaller ships, due to the new $45 and $75 tent/cabannas that take up most of deck 10 and a large chunk of the once-great LIDO deck (where reside the big pool, dining room, and space/tables for dining.) The new Asian restaurant was fantastic -- superb in every way. The Italian Canalleto restaurant was a joke -- just a part of the Lido Cafe. With the elimination of self-service washers/driers laundry service is a necessity -- with a 3 or more days wait time to get your clothes back (instead of the 24-48 hour promised service. Lido food quality and variety has suffered greatly compared with previous cruises on HAL. Few vegetables available but liquor is pushed (along with shipboard lotteries, books, etc.) incessantly and everywhere. We were glad o get off the ship for some better food than the Lido now offers -- the hamburgers were, however, always excellent. Hopefully by now HAL has fixed the month-long-broken elevator and never-operative Lido Fountain. However, little can be done to keep water from running off the ill-designed bathroom sinks (poor design!) and there's now no storage space in the bathrooms for toiletries. It's nice to have refrigerators in the rooms -- it would be really nice if they actually kept things cold and if they didn't charge you for minibar replacements that you haven't used (several of us had to fight to get incorrect charges removed.) Hopefully they've also fixed their supply chain so you wont be missing Kleenex for 3 weeks at a time and won't have to use only one towel per cabin (as we did when the driers broke down several days.) This ship is beautiful, glitzy, and chintz. It would make a great Carnival "Boat" with the circular love beds, apples, and champagne (really!) that beckon young love makers to rent those cabana/tents. However for us, and everyone we spoke with on this inaugural cruise, we'll not be among future cruisers on the Eurodam.
Ship Details:
Ship Quality
Too cramped. Poor layout -- The crow's nest is not joined with the computer room (don't bother -- internet access is way too slow and way overpriced for what you get) and with the library (bring money if you want to check out dvd's. Very clean, kept very well but tooooo crowded.
Dining/Food
Pinnacle Grille and Tamarind were excellent but the Pinnacle needs more variety. The food quality in the LIDO was generally average to poor and in the Dining room, lots of cheap Pasta was on the entree lists. Beef throughout the ship was excellent, albeit some tasted frozen. Other meats were OK, some even excellent. Not enough Chicken or fish varieties. Again, too few vegetables. Soups were great but deserts lacked variety and substance. Lobster twice in 27 days was nice and shrimp were in abundance. Dutch food was excellent quality.
Stateroom Quality
Crowded, cramped and only drawers were under the bed.
Ship Staff Quality
Indonesian and Filippino staff were generally superb and friendly as were some Dutch. However, some Dutch Officers need to learn better customer relations skills and how to smile. Watch out for the Mini-bar checker -- ours was very lax about checking the refrig. but over-charged us significantly after saying she would not.
Entertainment & Activities
Shows were superb but eliminating the late show meant having to skip afternoon activities/tours, etc. to see the show for us late diners. Not enough activities.....not enough classes (especially computer classes that were always impossible to access for many who wanted them.
